Let's Talk Fast Furniture!

To start us off here let's discuss what the definition of "sustainability" is and WHY we should care.

Sustainability -

Sustainability is the capacity to endure in a balanced way, ensuring that resources are utilized responsibly and equitably to maintain ecological and human well-being over time.

In other words, sustainability is the practice of meeting your needs WITHOUT DISRUPTING the needs of future generations . This involves a balance of economic, social and environmental needs to promote good health and prosperity to not only yourself and those around you, but also the world in which we all reside.

Now you may be wondering, how on earth does sustainability have anything to do with furniture. I'll tell you...

Fast Furniture

Over the last 20-30 years there has been a significant increase in the world of fast furniture, fast fashion, and fast industries in general.

We as people want everything NOW. As fast as humanly possible. If you can't pick it up today or have it delivered tomorrow you start looking elsewhere.

Most people these days know about fast fashion and have watched some short form video on Instagram or another platform showing the impact it is having on our culture , environment and wallets (we will get into your wallet later...no not like that...to help you SAVE money in the long run) .

However, it has come to my attention that not as many people know or understand the significance of the fast furniture that is hitting our markets today.

Large retailers such as Costco, Ikea, Target, etc are known for selling "quality" furniture for a cheap price that is "trending" . I don't see anything wrong with shopping at these retailers and often do myself for specific staple items (mainly food, I take care of my own furniture needs).

The problem with purchasing furniture from big box stores is they are made with only the sale in mind, but are missing every other mark.

Yes they look like nice, quality, luxury pieces that you can really invest in to keep forever. But that is very very far from the truth.

Imagine just how much of this trendy furniture from these three companies alone ends up in the landfill.

It is reasonable to assume that a large portion of the 12 MILLION TONS of furniture waste that entered the landfill in 2018 can be attributed to these large corporations producing ENDLESS low quality furniture.

We just don't make or value things the way we did in the "good ol' days".

Well, that is partially true.

There are still companies out there doing the right thing . You may have to wait longer for your dream sofa to become a reality and fork over a little more cash to start off. But in the long run you may actually save a significant amount of money and time .

How is this possible?

Most small scale furniture design and construction companies have YOU, their consumer in mind. They will tailor a couch, chair, bed, future family heirloom, to YOUR NEEDS. Not the needs of large corporations trying to streamline efforts and cut corners to make a quick buck.

This means actually making your vision come true. When you invest in a piece that you LOVE, you get a unique, quality piece filled with meaning that can be passed down to future generations.

During the initial design process, we will gather all of the information needed for your designer / builder to envision your dream.

Imagine instead of putting together an Ikea couch you get to pick out your own fabric and work on your design! Instead of serious time.

Seams will blow out due to seam allowances being too small, improper stitch lengths, etc. Cushions disintegrate, losing all luster, and cannot be revived. Fabric is quickly discolored. Holes will appear on the corners due to lack of padding on high wear zones. You may notice metal springs poking up through the deck, loose sagging material, or even feel the wooden structures throughout.

Who wants to feel the wooden supports of your couch through your couch cushions when you sit down? This is a huge quality issue.

THERE IS HOPE! You CAN reupholster and REUSE these fast furniture items. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you do! If you like the size and overall shape of what you have, new fabric, cushions and structural support WORK ABSOLUTE WONDERS! Don't believe me? Check out this couch I did recently.

We redid the seat cushion and back rest by replacing the old extra soft cushions (mostly low quality polyfill fluff and wildly damaged foam). This made the overall firmness of the couch go from drab to fab.

We removed the arm covers, added padding.

We cut down and refinished the wood legs in a natural finish.

We added new structural support in the form of a proper deck (there were just metal springs poking through a light piece of fabric), jute webbing instead of cardboard throughout, burlap throughout. This will all greatly improve the longevity of this piece, making it an heirloom piece.

And of course this stunning fabric.

Don't feel ashamed if all you can afford is a lower quality piece for now. But I encourage you to look at second hand shops first to see if you can find some good ol' bones to love. Cleaning Upholstery

Cleaning New or Used Upholstery

One thing I love to recommend to people who are getting their furniture reupholstered or even buying new, is to request a small sample of the fabric to take and keep at home to TEST ON instead of testing out a new cleaner on your whole couch. You really never know what cleaner is going to remove the color or stain your piece darker until after you've sprayed it on.

It's much easier and cheaper to spray or even test fabric brushes on a piece of fabric that isn't connected to your $$$ couch. Once you start messing with the upholstery, the upholstery tends to start messing with you. Your once worthy investment could turn into a devastating mistake with one spray from the wrong bottle. You have been warned.

Let's first talk about how to remove the day to day lint, dog hair, fuzzy bunnies, whatever surface area nucances you may have.

There are quite a few avenues to venture down here. I will share some of the basics and then my all time favorite fabric brush.

Some of the most common ways to remove surface area dirt is to vacuum, lint roll or blow off with an air compressor. None of these are bad by any means, and one might be the perfect solution for you.

However, I know that not all homes have an air compressor or a vaccum laying around waiting to clean your couch.

If you are one of these house holds you might look into a lint roll brush. Don't fall for the scam of the sticky sheet rollers. These are not worth your time or money. They fill up after one pass and you constantly have to buy more.

This is where my SECRET WEAPON comes into play. I have been using this specific brush for over three years now and haven't looked back. This brush cleans dog hair, fuzzy bunnies, etc off of almost anything. Its good on wool, woven fiber, velvet and mohair. I even have one to clean any animal hairs that might be on my clothes. They are cheap, effective and last forever. I get mine at the Ace Hardware near me. I will include a link here for you to check them out. You seriously won't regret it.

Stain Removers

Now here is the tricky part. The first step to getting stains out of your fabrics is knowing WHAT fabric you have. And keep in mind that it isn't always possible to remove stains. Sometimes nothing will work. It all depends on what materials you have and how porous they are.

Leather

Lets say first up you have a beautiful leather sofa. Your dream sofa. The piece you finally splurged on. But, you have young children. One of your kiddos used the side of the leather sofa as a drawing room.

How do we get the stains out?

That depends on a variety of factors. One will be what is the stain made out of ? Sharpie? Well the only thing that will work there is rubbing alcohol, which is why I recommend you get a fabric sample before going at the stain on the couch. The rubbing alcohol will most likely strip whatever finish was on the leather straight out. Leaving you with a rather large bald spot. Which depending on the color may be way more noticeable than the sharpie.

If you have a sample of the leather, I would replicate the sharpie, remove it and try re-staining the leather in a leather finish that is as close to your leather color as possible. If you have a hard time finding a leather stain close to your finish, try contacting a leather supply store or a local saddle maker . These are people who are EXPERTS in leather and will be the best at helping you find a solution.

If you are trying to get simple scratches , surface stains out of leather I would try using Leather Honey first. This can be found on Amazon. There is a leather cleaner and conditioner, both of which are best used with a clean microfiber rag.

This product is FANTASTIC when used on a finished leather. Some leathers, depending on the finish may become significantly darker when using this product. Which may be the look you're looking for. Again, this is something you should TEST on a small portion of your furniture that is less visible at first to make sure it doesn't alter the color past what your preferences are.

Leather Honey

The perk of using Leather Honey is that it will clean, condition and protect your leather so it lasts for a long long time.

This product is another one that is great to keep around to use on your boots, leather hand bags, dog leashes, etc.

Fabrics

Next up we have more of your standard upholstery fabrics. These are in some ways the easiest to clean. Some have protection built into them to help reduce the likelihood of stains. This is where you can try the spray cleaners or at home remedies.

Most of the time some hot hot water on a microfiber rag will be enough to gently dab the stain out.

If you cannot get the stain out with regular old hot water, I recommend using an upholstery or fabric cleaner . 9/10 they do the trick.

With fabric, if there are any hairs, say like in a velvet or mohair. Try to pay attention to the direction the hairs are going. Do not press or scrub too hard or go against the fabric direction. This may actually damage your piece even more.

Universal Love Language: Cushions

Cushions can make or break your home.

Here is what you need to consider -

Where in my home is this cushion going?
What do I want it to LOOK like?
What do I want it to FEEL like?
Does it need to be attached?

Cushions are the new universal self love, love language.

Made from a variety of materials and for a variety of purposes. But with all of the options available, only one main goal stands unchallenged.

COMFORT!

The whole purpose besides being ridiculously good looking is to FEEL exceptional.

Custom Cushions for Custom Spaces

First on the docket is where in your home this cushion is going to go. Limitless options is just half of the excitement. Once you decide where it goes, now it's time to break out the tape measure and get a measurement of the size you want. Trust me, this will help you later on in the process. Accurate measurements help your upholsterer see how much material they need to order for you as well as the amount of foam and dacron or other filling substitutes.

Take Photos

Take photos of where the cushion will go. This helps so much in the design process. And yes it is a design process with you as the lead designer. Let's say you are creating cushions for your breakfast nook. Are there any lips or raised edges to the wood around where the cushion will go? Does the cushion need to sit under any kind of over hang? If so, take photos of the over hang or raised edges with a measurement of the length, width and depth.

Cushion Style

Did you know there are different types of cushions? There are two main categories that all cushions fall under. Fixed or Loose .

Fixed Cushions

Fixed Cushions are cushions that CANNOT be removed from their space. They have either been screwed, velcro'd, or upholstered into place. Think of couch cushions or bench cushions that you cannot pick up.

Loose Cushions

Loose Cushions are cushions that CAN be removed from their space. They are free floating. Think of a removable chair cushion you can take off to wash.

Cushion Subcatagories

Bench Seat

Bench Seat Cushions are described as once cushion with no divisions . They can be either loose or fixed into place. They are simple and elegant in design

Box Cushion

Box Cushions have a distinct TOP and BOTTOM panel that are "boxed in" by four side panels. This style of cushion is usually loose , but can be custom made to be a fixed by adding a layer of non-stick or velcro to the bottom.

J, L or T Cushion

J, L and T Cushions look just like their names describe. These cushions usually wrap around a fixed object. That could be over the arms of your sofa, or around a support beam in your home. These cushions, much like the box cushion can be either loose or fixed by adding velcro or non-stick if desired.

Knife Edge Cushion

Knife Edge Cushions are very similar to a pillow, where there is one front and back panel that is attached by one seam. This style has been gaining in popularity in modern styled homes. Knife Edge Cushions tend to be thinner cushions. When made too thick they tend to loose the desired shape over time. These cushions are a great option for back cushions or as a bench top.

Waterfall Cushion

Waterfall Cushions do not have a band sewn on. The only portion of these cushions that is sewn is the zipper (unless it is an upholstered cushion) and the corners. The top of the fabric will wrap around the sides and connect to the bottom without any interruption.

Custom Upholstery Fabric

Now that we know where the cushion goes, how big it is and what style, we can start on the fun part!

Fabric

The material you choose for your cushion will greatly impact the look and overall feel . This is where a lot of your overall cost will come from. Some materials are more expensive than others. Most materials are sold by the yard. Price per yard can range anywhere from $20-$800 or more so make your choice wisely. If you are unsure of where to look for fabric ask your designer or sewer where they recommend you looking based on your price requirements.

Lets talk about fabric first. Fabric is an entwined fiber construction. The different fibers in the process, pattern, texture and creation process are where the fabric gets its subcategory names. Fabrics are made from natural or synthetic materials and are either woven or knitted together.

Synthetic materials are created by man
Woven fabrics are created on a loom and are woven both vertically and horizontally. Woven fabrics typically don't stretch and are therefore tauter and sturdier than a knit fabric.

Knit fabrics are interconnecting looped strands known for their stretch and elasticity while still maintaining shape.

Leather

Not all leather is created equal

Some things to consider when choosing leather...

First of all, this is a bi-product from animals, meanin g that each piece is special and unique . This means there may be unusable portions of the hides you buy depending on the look you are going for. If you are looking for absolute perfection in your piece, meaning we avoid any scratches, stretch marks, holes, dark or light spots, thinned sections , then you many need to order extra hides which will increase your overall cost.

If you are looking for a one of a kind cushion you may like the look of any of the above mentioned defects. This could help you to reduce your overall cost.

The Stuffing

No no, not that kind of stuffing... for that we will have to wait for Thanksgiving

The inside of a cushion is typically made out of some sort of foam, dacron or a down wrap.

This one is really up to you and your preference. Cushions can be made almost any size and almost any density. If you want a firmer cushion that looks fluffy, your best bet is a foam core with a Dacron wrap. If you're looking for something that you can sink into (but still be supported) your best bet will likely be a foam core, a down feather wrap and Dacron.

Again, this one is up to you. There are endless options. Ask your Upholsterer to make a recommendation based on your needs.

Why Custom Pillows? What's the Difference?

Now Hang in there for this one.

Let's ask a few questions here to start.

What is the difference in quality between a custom or hand made pillow and a pillow you can find at Target, Walmart or Amazon?
What is the difference in style?
What are the sizing options?
Are there hypoallergenic options?
What material?

Take a walk with me through the isles of one of the stores listed above. You will notice there isn't a large number of options. The options that are available are on trend, inexpensive in both price point and quality, and more or less the same size. Maybe you find that perfect pillow for the sofa in your living room or to accent a chair in your home. But the chances are you will walk out of the store with the "perfect" pillow, only to realize it's all wrong when you get home. Maybe you make the trip back to the store to return it, but in all reality you're likely going to keep it for a while and replace it with something else that has the same negative unsatisfied effect on you.

Now you can check out their online section of pillows. There could be more color or size options, which is unlikely, but maybe. Keep in mind you cannot touch the fabric and you don't know how comfortable the pillow will actually be to lean back on or lay your head on for that late night movie. What kind of material is in the insert (inside of the pillow) made of? Most likely the pillow will be made from an artificial filler and not actual down feathers or a quality substitute. That means they won't have any of the plush, pillow like squish, that we all love. They may look nice and sturdy enough, but how do they feel? Chances are not great.

Let's now think about a custom made pillow from a local shop . Here's where things get fun . Usually there are no store fronts for you to walk around in. There may be an online shop or not. So what's the point? Why go somewhere you can't see the finished product? Easy . The point is that your local shop is not usually mass producing on that scale. They are not slapping together 10,000 pillows a day that may or may not be made of quality . Quite the opposite. They are making your pillows to order however you want . Different sizes, shapes, materials, styles! The options are ENDLESS ! Maybe that sounds a little overwhelming at first but trust me, its as easy as chowing down on a Thanksgiving pie and maybe more satisfying in the long term.

What are the custom pillow options?

Pillow Size

If you are struggling to decide how big or how small you want your pillow to be try cutting out a piece of cardboard in a few different size options and place it on your piece of furniture. Walk around your choice for a day or two to be sure you like the look and location in the room.

Pillow Shape

One of the best parts about working with your local craftsman is that you get the CHOOSE whatever shape you want ! Look at a design magazine, Pinterest or another platform for some inspiration. Some options include ball , pyramid , square , rectangular , 3D cubes , the options really go on and on. Get creative .

Pillow Insert

Here's where your squish factor comes into play. Do you like firm or stiffer pillows? Maybe ask for it to be filled up a little more, or less if you like your pillows soft and light feeling.

You also get to choose the type of material inside of the insert. If you like the feel of down feathers and are not allergic I would personally recommend going the feather route. They provide support, fluffy appearance, and can be re-fluffed over time if your pillow starts to sag. If you do need hypoallergenic there are plenty of options for you too! My favorite is a down alternative fill which is a synthetic material that is less likely to collect allergens that cause allergies. You will still have that nice fluffy appearance and support with a good re-fluff.

If you like the look of the over stuffed, ultra plush pillows you can opt in to add a dacron wrap to the pillow. The wrap will sit on the outside of the insert and help to round out the cover, and fill out the corners. Dacron is a polyester fiber known for its quality and durability . It is hypoallergenic, non-absorbent and mildew-resistant .

Pillow Style

Now comes the fun stuff. What is the cover going to look like? This is another great research topic. Hop on Pinterest or another searching platform and look up home decor pillows. SAVE SAVE SAVE those inspiration photos. Keep looking at the styles you like and imagine them in your space.

What about hides?
Animal hides are a great option as well. They help bring a more natural feel into your home. There are man made options for all of the following if you are opposed to using animal products. These pillows tend to feel a little bit stiffer overall. If you want the look of the hair or leather, consider doing a front and back to the pillow. My favorite combination at the moment is an Icelandic Shearling Hide with a felt back.

One thing to keep in mind is not all hides are created equal. Some will have scars, different texture, different color, different length in hair and different thickness. But that is the fun of it.

Every one of your pillows will be slightly different . Which can add to the appeal. It's like you're getting 5 different pillows made from the same materials.

If you want to view the hides in person before making the purchase try looking for a local vendor . In most areas there are local farmers and ranchers who will use all of the parts of their livestock so they don't waste . Most of them are more than happy for you to swing by and hand select which hides you want. These hides may also be cheaper than what you will order online.

With all of this in mind, I hope you now see why a custom pillow may be the right move for you in your home. Custom pillows are designed with YOU in mind. Your pillow should be a reflection of your personal style, not a mass produced one size fits all.

Why Local?

You've been walking around your house for a few months now knowing something is missing. It just doesn't quite feel like home to you. That could be because it's not a space you have truly invested in, making your own. Sure you could go to some chain furniture store and buy something that might last a year or two that you mostly like. But maybe the color isn't quite right, it doesn't fit as well as it could, its not as soft as you thought it would be. Its not PERFECT. It's not made for YOU.

That pillow or cushion has been mass manufactured and is in THOUSANDS of homes. THOUSANDS . We buy these cheap, potentially toxic items, knowing we will eventually cycle through, throw them away and keep chasing the "trends" that we don't really like anyways. This endless cycle of consumerism is terrible for our environment, but also horrendous for our wallets.

Steer clear of the furniture chain stores and look for local creators . They are the key to making a space truly YOURS. I promise you, if you shop around in your local area you will find someone who is passionate about making a piece that is perfect for you . Maybe you bought the chair a little bit cheaper at a furniture store but you don't like the fabric, or it needs a little extra padding. There is someone in your community who has the answer to your problem and can make a quality piece out of the bones you have. There's so many options on ways to get good, quality pieces. Go to a thrift store, check out Facebook Market Place, Craigslist, estate sales. There are all great options if you want to find some good quality bones to fix up for cheap. Furniture is no longer made the way it used to be. Most furniture shops these days are more interested in quick turn around, cheap processes and a fast buck. The result of this mindset is cheaply made products that you will not be passing down through the generations. Heck, you'd be lucky to pass it on to next year.

It's so easy to fall into the cycle of endless trash, products etc. that you're always having to get rid of. What a time suck. Think about your parents or grandparents. They bought the best quality products that they could afford so they wouldn't have to buy them again next year when they broke or got outdated. Maybe you ended up with some of their vintage or antique pieces and just love the memories behind them but hate the old fabric. That's an easy fix. Find a color or style (solid, groovy, modern, vintage, contemporary), fabric type (velvet, mohair, leather, suede, chenille, natural linen), find a local upholsterer or seamstress. Get a conversation started with them. In the long term you will build a relationship with them where they want to help you as quickly and efficiently as possible. You won't have to wait in line or be bombarded at a large chainstore by sales people who just want to sell you anything, not the perfect thing.

Some things to think about before throwing out that chair, pillow, whatever the case may be. Why don't I like this piece? Are there good bones and shape to it? Does it need a simple facelift, fluffing and some new fabric? Do I want to add or take away any design elements such as tufting, double or single welt, pleats, sewn corners, etc etc? What is my budget? Do I have enough in my budget to redo this piece in an expensive fabric or something more budget friendly? Should the fabric be easy to clean? Pet friendly? Kid friendly? Your local artisan is here to help you make these decisions and bring your dream to life.

Some personal recommendations I have if you want to add or change a piece you have is to:

Find fabric samples and place it on the current piece you have to make sure you will be happy with the new color and material type. This is a great option if you are on the fence between a few different samples. Most local creators will have sample books you can borrow to see what options you like in your space. Lighting makes a HUGE difference. What looks good in a store with lots of lighting may not look the same in your home.

If you're adding a whole new piece, buy some painters tape and mark out where the piece will be in your home so you know you like the size. This is great to do with items like pillows, side tables etc. The tape allows you to walk around the piece and start to envision what your room will look like with it in there.

Print out an inspirational photo representing the new piece and hang it up where you want it to be. Look at it everyday and write down any changes you would make to it to make you happy.

Print out different stitching options you might like. Some options include,
